Seven Words Towards Better Presentations

Most of the movies I go to are pretty good.

Same thing for most of the plays I attend.

But here’s the cold, hard truth. Most of the business presentations I go to are pretty awful.

On one hand, it’s not a surprise. Jerry Seinfeld once joked that with public speaking ranked as the number one fear of most adults—with death number two—at a funeral most people would rather be the one in the coffin rather than the one giving the eulogy.   

But the reality is that with a little thought and preparation, anyone—and I do mean anyone—can do a lot better.

Mobile Messaging Wildfire

One of my favorite urban legends (actually a true story) concerns my business partner’s next-door neighbor’s teenage daughter and the quiet “little party” she planned to have while her parents were out of town. Now, bear in mind that the party was completely sanctioned and pre-approved by her parents.

Fifteen Minutes of Privacy

Andy Warhol famously said that in the future everyone will have fifteen minutes of fame. 

Nowadays, it seems like in the future everyone can aspire to fifteen minutes of privacy. 

And whether it’s illicit photos of Kate Upton showing up online or my kids living their lives out loud on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, we no doubt have less privacy now than ever before.

If a picture is worth a thousand words...

Anyone who came of age in the 1980’s remembers the early days of MTV (back when they still played music videos.)  MTV premiered in 1981 with the Buggles “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Never has so significant a change been heralded by a more mediocre song. 

Because video did more than kill the radio star. It’s fundamentally changed the way we communicate. Television has eclipsed print as a news source. Sites like YouTube have become the most popular sites on the internet.  And some TED talks have been viewed by over 20 million people.

The Paperless Association

Decades after some unnamed publicist coined the term “the paperless office,” paperless association operations are at hand. At least that’s the case for many technology industry associations. For tech groups, participation by myriad stakeholders around the globe has made paperless systems for working together a necessity.
